Maia is Microsoft's own AI chip. Microsoft designs it, TSMC manufactures it, and it runs inside Microsoft's Azure data centres 1. The current chip, Maia 200, was announced in January 2026 and runs OpenAI's GPT-5.2 models, Microsoft 365 Copilot and Microsoft's own AI models 1. You cannot rent a Maia chip: Microsoft uses it for its own services 1.

Microsoft still buys AI chips from NVIDIA and AMD at scale. Satya Nadella said in January 2026 that "because we can vertically integrate doesn't mean we just only vertically integrate" 3. Maia's job is cost: Microsoft says Maia 200 gives 30% better performance per dollar than the latest hardware in its fleet 1.

ExpertFor specialists

Microsoft's June 2026 quarter: revenue $90.0 billion, up 18%; Azure and other cloud services grew 43% 4. Fiscal 2026 revenue was $331.8 billion and additions to property and equipment $115.9 billion 4. Capital spending in the quarter was $41 billion including $5.6 billion of finance leases, and Microsoft now expects about $175 billion for calendar 2026 5.

Microsoft's annual report does not name Maia; it describes "hardware, which includes custom-built silicon and strong partnerships with chip manufacturers" 6. Microsoft is incorporated in Washington State 9. Its chip lab, where new chips are probed and tested, is on the Redmond campus 10.

ExpertFor specialists

Microsoft's fiscal year ends on 30 June. In the June 2026 quarter the Microsoft Cloud brought in $59.3 billion and the Intelligent Cloud segment $39.3 billion 4. Microsoft now owns about 27% of OpenAI on an as-converted diluted basis, following the October 2025 restructuring 11.

3.The story

SimpleStart here
  • 2017 Project Brainwave: Microsoft runs AI on programmable FPGA chips in Bing 12.
  • 2023 Maia 100 announced, Microsoft's first AI chip for large language models 10.
  • 2023 Microsoft co-founds the open MX number formats for AI 13.
  • 2024 Maia 100 details shown at Hot Chips 14.
  • 2026 Maia 200 announced in January and running in Iowa and Arizona by June 1 2.
DeeperThe detail

Microsoft's first AI hardware was not a custom chip. Project Brainwave, shown in August 2017, ran AI models on Intel FPGAs (reprogrammable chips) to speed up Bing 12, and was offered in preview on Azure in 2018 15. Maia 100 followed in November 2023, announced with Cobalt, Microsoft's Arm server processor; Microsoft said it would roll out to its data centres from early 2024 10. OpenAI's Sam Altman said the two companies had worked together "to refine and test it with our models" 10.

ExpertFor specialists

The second generation was late. The Information reported in June 2025 that the chip code-named Braga, which became Maia 200, had slipped at least six months into 2026, citing design changes including features OpenAI requested and staff turnover 16. When Maia 200 arrived, Microsoft said the time from first silicon to first data-centre rack was "less than half that of comparable AI infrastructure programs" 1.

DeeperThe detail

Maia 200 is described by Microsoft as its "first silicon and system platform optimized specifically" for inference 17. Microsoft calls the programme "multi-generational" 1. Press reports say a Maia 300 could be unveiled as early as September 2026, with Microsoft seeking TSMC capacity for more than 300,000 chips for 2027; Microsoft has not announced it 18.

ExpertFor specialists

In July 2026 Nadella said Maia 200 "continues to scale", now supporting both OpenAI and MAI models, and delivers 40% better performance per watt on Microsoft's own MAI models 5. Microsoft has also opened a Maia 200 software development kit to developers, start-ups and academics in preview 1.

5.How it’s made

SimpleStart here

Microsoft says who makes Maia: TSMC 1 19.

  1. Design: Microsoft's silicon teams; chips are tested in a lab on the Redmond campus 10.
  2. Chip factory: TSMC, on its 3 nm process for Maia 200 and 5 nm for Maia 100 1 19.
  3. Packaging: Maia 100 used TSMC's CoWoS-S packaging, which joins the chip and its memory on one base 14.
  4. Memory: 216 GB of HBM3e on Maia 200 1; Microsoft does not name the supplier.
  5. Racks: Microsoft designs its own liquid-cooled racks for Maia 1 19.
DeeperThe detail

Maia 100 was "one of the largest processors made on 5nm node using advanced packaging technology from TSMC" 19, about 820 square millimetres 14. Maia 200 packs more than 140 billion transistors 1. Microsoft does not say which TSMC factory makes Maia.

Other names appear only in the press: SK hynix as the sole memory supplier for Maia 200 20. Microsoft announced in February 2024 that it would make "a chip design" on Intel's 18A process, without saying which chip 21.

ExpertFor specialists

Cooling is part of the design. Maia 100 racks came with a "sidekick" cabinet that pumps cold liquid to plates on the chips, "a bit like a radiator in a car" 10; Maia 200 uses a second-generation closed-loop liquid-cooling unit 1. In September 2025 Microsoft showed microfluidic cooling, channels etched into the chip itself, removing heat up to three times better than cold plates in its tests 22.

6.Where it’s made: factories and addresses

SimpleStart here

Microsoft names TSMC as Maia's maker but not the factory, so there is no factory address to give. Where Maia runs 1 2:

Azure regionLocationStatus
US CentralNear Des Moines, Iowa, USAMaia 200 in production 1 2
US West 3Near Phoenix, Arizona, USAMaia 200 in production 1 2
Italy, Australia, South KoreaNot specifiedNext, as of June 2026 2

Microsoft gives locations as "near" a city and publishes no street addresses for these sites 1.

DeeperThe detail

Microsoft's flagship AI sites run NVIDIA, not Maia. Its Fairwater data centre in Mount Pleasant, Wisconsin (315 acres, three buildings, 1.2 million square feet) is described with "hundreds of thousands of the latest NVIDIA GPUs" 23, and its Atlanta Fairwater site, operating since October 2025, with NVIDIA GB200 racks 24.

ExpertFor specialists

Microsoft added 31 data centres in the June 2026 quarter and 88 in fiscal 2026, and Azure passed $100 billion of annual revenue 5. It said in April 2026 that it expects to "remain constrained at least through 2026" on capacity 25.

7.How it works

SimpleStart here

Like other AI chips, Maia is built from many small maths units working in parallel, fed by very fast stacked memory 14. Maia 200 is tuned for very small number formats (4-bit and 8-bit), which let it do more sums per second when running models, and keeps 272 MB of fast memory on the chip itself 1.

DeeperThe detail

Maia 100 was split into 16 clusters of four tiles, each tile with its own tensor unit for matrix maths and a vector processor 14. It was the first chip to use the Microscaling (MX) formats, open 4-, 6- and 8-bit number formats that Microsoft developed with AMD, Arm, Intel, Meta, NVIDIA and Qualcomm through the Open Compute Project 19 13.

ExpertFor specialists

Maia 200 links chips over standard Ethernet rather than a proprietary fabric: 2.8 TB/s of scale-up bandwidth per chip, four chips per tray joined by direct links, and a two-tier network for clusters of up to 6,144 chips 1. At Hot Chips 2026 Microsoft said Maia 200 has no separate scale-out network: "it is all scale-up networking" 26. Software runs through PyTorch and the Triton compiler, with a low-level language for hand-tuning 1.

DeeperThe detail

Microsoft's own comparisons for Maia 200: "three times the FP4 performance of the third generation Amazon Trainium" and FP8 performance "above Google's seventh generation TPU" 1. On paper that is consistent with the rivals' published figures (see our Trainium and TPU guides), but these are the companies' own figures, not independent tests.

ExpertFor specialists

At Hot Chips 2026 Microsoft reported measured figures including 1.65 petaflops of effective attention throughput and about 1.3 TB/s for a BF16 all-reduce 26. Microsoft's own posts give no die size; coverage of its Hot Chips 2026 talk put it at about 820 square millimetres 26. Maia 100's 12 × 400 Gb Ethernet ports gave 600 GB/s of network bandwidth 14.

9.Official pricing

SimpleStart here

Maia is not for sale or rent. Microsoft uses it for its own services, including Microsoft Foundry, Microsoft 365 Copilot and OpenAI models on Azure; there is no Maia virtual machine and no published price 1.

Maia 200 chip or rentalNot published by the company 1
Maia 100Not published by the company 19
Maia 200 software kit (SDK)Preview for developers, start-ups and academics; no price stated 1
DeeperThe detail

What you can rent on Azure is NVIDIA and AMD hardware, and Microsoft publishes those prices: for example an 8-GPU H100 machine lists at $98.32 an hour in East US, and an 8-GPU AMD MI300X machine at $48.00 (see our NVIDIA and AMD guides).

ExpertFor specialists

Maia's value shows up in Microsoft's own costs rather than in a price list: "30% better performance per dollar than the latest generation hardware in our fleet" 1 and 40% better performance per watt on MAI models 5. Press reported in May 2026 that Anthropic was in early talks to use Maia, which would make it the first outside user; neither company has confirmed a deal 27.

10.The software lock-in

SimpleStart here

Microsoft's advantage is scale and control: it runs one of the world's biggest clouds, designs its own racks, networking and cooling, and can tune Maia for the exact models it serves, such as GPT-5.2 and Copilot 1.

DeeperThe detail

Microsoft also has rights to OpenAI's hardware ideas. Under the October 2025 agreement it keeps rights to OpenAI's models and products through 2032, excluding OpenAI's consumer hardware 11. Nadella said in November 2025: "As they innovate even at the system level, we get access to all of it" 28.

ExpertFor specialists

Software uses open tools rather than a proprietary stack: PyTorch, Triton (originally from OpenAI) and ONNX Runtime on Maia 100 19 14, and a PyTorch- and Triton-based SDK for Maia 200 1. The MX number formats Maia uses are an open, licence-free standard 13.

11.Who buys it and why

SimpleStart here

Maia's customers are Microsoft's own services. Maia 200 runs OpenAI's GPT-5.2 models, Microsoft Foundry, Microsoft 365 Copilot, and work by Microsoft's Superintelligence team on synthetic data and reinforcement learning 1.

DeeperThe detail

Maia 100's design was shaped by Copilot and aimed at Copilot and Azure OpenAI Service 10. In July 2026 Microsoft said Maia 200 supports both OpenAI and Microsoft's own MAI models 5. Microsoft has not published what share of its AI work runs on Maia 5.

ExpertFor specialists

Microsoft's CTO Kevin Scott said in October 2025 that Microsoft's plan is to use mainly its own chips in future, while noting that "the best price-performance solution has been Nvidia for years" 29. In October 2025 Microsoft also said it had deployed "the world's first large scale cluster of NVIDIA GB300s" 30.

  4. Maia 100 was the first chip to use the open MX formats 19.
  5. No Maia in India: Microsoft's announced Maia regions are the US, then Italy, Australia and South Korea 2.

13.Weak spots

SimpleStart here

Limits, from Microsoft's own statements and reporting:

  • Late: press reported Maia 200 slipped at least six months 16.
  • Still dependent on NVIDIA and AMD, by Nadella's own account 3.
  • Built for inference: Maia 200 is optimised for running models rather than training them 17.
  • Capacity-constrained "at least through 2026" 25.
DeeperThe detail

The same June 2025 report said the delayed chip was expected to fall well short of NVIDIA's Blackwell, and that Microsoft had dropped plans for a training chip in early 2024 16. These are press reports, not Microsoft statements.

ExpertFor specialists

Microsoft's 10-K warns that critical data-centre components come from a limited number of suppliers and can be in short supply 6. Maia depends on a single foundry, TSMC 1.

14.India angle

SimpleStart here

In December 2025 Microsoft announced $17.5 billion of investment in India over 2026 to 2029, on top of $3 billion announced in January 2025 33. Its newest Indian region, India South Central in Hyderabad, went live on 6 August 2026 with three availability zones 34.

DeeperThe detail

Microsoft's other Indian regions are Central India (Pune), South India (Chennai) and West India (Mumbai), plus two regions run with Jio 34. Early Hyderabad customers named by Microsoft include Adani Group, Bajaj Finserv and HDFC Bank 34.

ExpertFor specialists

No Microsoft source we found places Maia in India 2. Under a January 2025 agreement with the IndiaAI Mission, Microsoft committed to train 500,000 people by 2026 and set up AI productivity labs in 10 states 35.

15.What’s next

SimpleStart here

Only what Microsoft has announced:

  • Maia 200 in more regions: Italy, Australia and South Korea 2.
  • More generations: the Maia programme is "multi-generational" 1.
  • Higher spending: fiscal 2027 capital spending will grow year on year 5.
DeeperThe detail

Press reports say Maia 300 could be unveiled as early as September 2026, with more than 300,000 chips sought from TSMC for 2027 18; as of 22 September 2026 we found no Microsoft announcement.

ExpertFor specialists

The test is whether Maia can carry a larger share of Microsoft's inference and win an outside customer. Anthropic's reported talks would be the first sign 27; Microsoft's own capacity statements suggest it will keep buying NVIDIA and AMD at scale regardless 3 25.
