DeeperThe detail

AMD's route into AI came through supercomputers. Its Instinct MI250X chips, announced in 2021, powered Frontier at Oak Ridge National Laboratory, which in May 2022 became the first machine to pass one exaflop on the Top500 list 21 17. Its MI300A chip, which puts processor and GPU in one package, powers El Capitan at Lawrence Livermore, which kept the title of world's fastest supercomputer in November 2025 22. The same chiplet designs became the MI300X for AI in December 2023 18.

ExpertFor specialists

AMD bought its way into whole-rack systems. It agreed to buy ZT Systems in August 2024 for $4.9 billion including contingent payments 23, completed it in March 2025 20, then sold ZT's manufacturing arm to Sanmina in October 2025 while keeping the design teams; Sanmina became its preferred partner for building racks 24 11. Software was bought too: Nod.ai (2023), Silo AI (about $665 million, 2024) and Brium (2025) 25 26 27.

AMD names its AI chip designs "CDNA": CDNA 3 for MI300X and MI325X, CDNA 4 for the MI350 series, CDNA 5 for the MI400 series 30. The MI400 family has two branches: MI455X (part of the MI450 series) for AI, and MI430X for scientific computing and national AI projects, with 288 teraflops of full-precision (FP64) maths, expected in 2027 5 31.

Status as of September 2026: AMD said on 23 July 2026 that Helios was in production 4, with volume deployments expected in the second half of 2026 32.

ExpertFor specialists

The MI350X and MI355X share a design but differ in power: MI350X is rated at up to 1,000 W and offered with air or liquid cooling, MI355X at up to 1,400 W 33 34. AMD has published the roadmap after MI400: MI500 in 2027 and MI600 in 2028 4.

5.How it’s made

SimpleStart here

AMD designs its chips and other companies make them 2:

  1. Chip making: TSMC makes AMD's advanced chips; GlobalFoundries supplies some older-process wafers 2.
  2. Chiplets: an Instinct chip is not one piece of silicon but several small "chiplets" stacked and joined in one package.
  3. Memory: Samsung and Micron supply the HBM memory for the MI350 series 35 36.
  4. Assembly and test: two joint ventures with Tongfu Microelectronics, plus SPIL and KYEC 2.
  5. Racks: Sanmina is AMD's preferred partner for building Helios racks 24.
DeeperThe detail

The MI300X combines 5 nm compute chiplets and 6 nm input/output chiplets made by TSMC, 153 billion transistors in all 37 38. For the MI350 series, AMD's documentation says the compute chiplets are made on TSMC's N3P process and the input/output chiplets on N6 39. The MI400 series moves to 2 nm and 3 nm 30.

AMD said Samsung is its primary HBM3E partner for the MI350X and MI355X, and that the two companies "will align on primary HBM4 supply" for the MI455X 35; Micron said its 12-high 36 GB HBM3E is in the MI350 series 36.

ExpertFor specialists

AMD is also paying to secure packaging. In May 2026 it announced more than $10 billion of investments in Taiwan's supply chain, including advanced packaging with ASE, SPIL and PTI, and substrates 40. In the US, AMD said it validated its 5th-generation EPYC processors at TSMC's Arizona fab and that its "Venice" EPYC was the first high-performance product taped out on TSMC's 2 nm process 41. AMD has not said that any Instinct AI chip is made in Arizona.

7.How it works

SimpleStart here

AMD's AI chips work like NVIDIA's: thousands of small maths units doing sums at the same time, fed by very fast stacked memory. AMD's difference is how the chip is built. Instead of one big piece of silicon, an Instinct chip is several smaller chiplets joined together, which lets AMD mix different manufacturing processes and fit more memory 37 39.

DeeperThe detail

Memory is AMD's headline advantage: 192 GB on MI300X, 256 GB on MI325X, 288 GB on MI355X and 432 GB of HBM4 on MI455X 37 28 34 5. More memory means a large AI model can run on fewer chips. A Helios rack holds 31 TB of HBM4 with 1.7 petabytes per second of combined bandwidth 47.

ExpertFor specialists

The MI300X has 304 compute units on eight compute chiplets 37 38; the MI355X has 256 compute units 34. Helios links its 72 GPUs with 260 TB/s of scale-up bandwidth and 43 TB/s of scale-out networking, using AMD's Pensando "Vulcano" 800 Gb/s network cards 47 32. AMD says Helios supports UALink, the open chip-linking standard it co-founded 6.

AMD claims Helios delivers 34 times the token throughput of MI355X systems 4. That is AMD's own claim.

ExpertFor specialists

A quirk to watch: for MXFP4 on the MI355X, AMD lists the same 10.1 petaflops figure for dense and sparse 34, while its FP8 and FP16 figures double with sparsity. Compare the FP8 dense figures (2.61 for MI300X, 5 for MI355X) for a like-for-like view 37 34. For full-precision science work the MI300X does 163.4 teraflops of FP64 matrix maths against 78.6 for MI355X 37 34: AMD traded scientific precision for AI speed, and now offers MI430X for scientific work 5.

10.The software lock-in

SimpleStart here

AMD's answer to NVIDIA's CUDA is ROCm, its free, open-source software for running AI on AMD chips. AMD has released it since at least 2016 60. Its newest version, ROCm 10.0, came out on 26 August 2026 and supports the main AI tools, including PyTorch, JAX and vLLM 61.

DeeperThe detail

AMD's strategy is openness: open-source software, and open standards so customers are not locked in. It co-founded the UALink group in May 2024 with Broadcom, Cisco, Google, HPE, Intel, Meta and Microsoft to create an open alternative to NVIDIA's NVLink 6. It bought Pensando for networking (about $1.9 billion, 2022) and three AI software companies (Nod.ai, Silo AI, Brium) to improve its software 62 25 26 27.

ExpertFor specialists

Software is AMD's known gap, and it is buying help. Under its July 2026 deal with Anthropic, AMD adopts Claude internally and uses it to speed up ROCm development 31. On the August 2026 earnings call, Lisa Su said open-source contributions to ROCm had risen more than tenfold in a year and that more than 3 million models run "out of the box" 63 (call quotes are from a third-party transcript). AMD itself names NVIDIA's "proprietary software ecosystem" as a competitive risk 1.

11.Who buys it and why

SimpleStart here

AMD has signed multi-gigawatt deals with three of the biggest AI labs. AMD said in August 2026 that Helios is being deployed by Anthropic, Cirrascale, HUMAIN, Meta, Microsoft, OpenAI, Oracle, TensorWave, Vultr and others 3.

DeeperThe detail
  • OpenAI (Oct 2025): 6 gigawatts of AMD GPUs, starting with 1 gigawatt of MI450 in the second half of 2026 64.
  • Meta (Feb 2026): 6 gigawatts of Instinct GPUs based on a custom MI450, first shipments in the second half of 2026 65.
  • Anthropic (Jul 2026): up to 2 gigawatts of MI450 in Helios racks from the first half of 2027, with AMD investing up to $5 billion in Anthropic 31.
  • Oracle: 50,000 MI450 GPUs from the third quarter of 2026 66.
  • Microsoft: adopting Helios with MI455X for Azure 67.
  • HUMAIN, Saudi Arabia (May 2025): a $10 billion collaboration for 500 MW of AMD computing over five years 68.
ExpertFor specialists

AMD said in June 2025 that seven of the ten largest AI model builders run production work on Instinct 19. It does not name customers' shares of revenue in the filings we could read; it says only that a small number of customers account for a substantial share 1. International sales were 67% of revenue in 2025 11. On the August 2026 call AMD said it expects Data Center revenue to more than double in 2027 63.

12.Hidden in plain sight

SimpleStart here

Public facts buried in AMD's filings and releases. Each links to the exact document.

  1. OpenAI can buy up to 160 million AMD shares for one cent each, if milestones are met; the last batch needs AMD's share price to reach $600. The warrant runs until October 2030 69.
  2. Meta got a near-identical warrant four months later: another 160 million shares, so up to 320 million in total 65.
  3. None of the OpenAI warrant had vested by the end of 2025 11.
  4. AMD is investing up to $5 billion in Anthropic alongside Anthropic's chip order 31.
  5. The ZT Systems round trip: bought for $3.2 billion in cash plus 8.3 million shares, then its factories sold to Sanmina for $2.4 billion plus up to $450 million more 11.
DeeperThe detail
  1. The China export charge shrank: AMD warned of up to about $800 million in charges when US rules blocked its MI308 chip 70, but the net charge for 2025 was about $440 million after it released reserves and sold about $390 million of MI308 to China in the fourth quarter 11.
  2. It guided about $100 million of MI308 sales to China for the first quarter of 2026 7.
  3. Purchase commitments of $12.2 billion, with $8.5 billion due in 2026 11.
  4. Inventory reached $8.47 billion in June 2026, 62% of it work in progress, ahead of the MI450 ramp 12.
  5. AMD's Penang and Suzhou assembly plants are no longer AMD's: since 2016 they have been 85% owned by Tongfu Microelectronics, with AMD keeping 15% 43.
ExpertFor specialists
  1. More than $10 billion committed to Taiwan's supply chain, including packaging with ASE, SPIL and PTI 40.
  2. AI chips earn less than average: the CFO said Data Center AI margins are slightly below the company average 63 (third-party transcript).
  3. Full-precision maths halved from MI300X to MI355X (163.4 to 78.6 teraflops FP64) as AMD optimised for AI 37 34.
  4. Two-thirds of sales are outside the US: 67% in 2025 11.
  5. Samsung is AMD's primary memory partner for the MI350X and MI355X, and the two say they will align on HBM4 supply for the MI455X 35.

13.Weak spots

SimpleStart here

Risks AMD lists in its own annual report 1:

  • One chip factory: it relies on TSMC for all its most advanced chips.
  • NVIDIA's software lead: AMD names NVIDIA's proprietary software ecosystem as a competitive threat.
  • Few big customers: a small number account for a large share of sales.
  • Export rules: US controls may limit who it can sell to.
  • Supply shortages could force it to ration chips between customers.
DeeperThe detail

The 2025 export rule on the MI308 showed the risk in real money: AMD first warned of up to about $800 million in charges 70. Its three big AI-lab deals (OpenAI, Meta, Anthropic) all ship MI450-based chips from late 2026 or 2027 64 65 31, so execution on one product generation carries a lot of weight.

ExpertFor specialists

AMD's inventory build (62% work in progress at $8.47 billion) and $12.2 billion of purchase commitments are bets that the MI450 ramp lands on time 12 11. The warrants given to OpenAI and Meta dilute existing shareholders if the milestones are met 69 65.

14.India angle

SimpleStart here

India is central to AMD's engineering. In November 2023 AMD opened its largest design centre in the world in Bengaluru, and said India held 25% of its global workforce 46. The Bengaluru teams work on data-centre processors and GPUs, 3D chip stacking and AI 46.

DeeperThe detail

In July 2023 AMD announced plans to invest about $400 million in India over five years, add about 3,000 engineering roles by the end of 2028, and said it already had more than 6,500 employees in India 71. The Technostar campus covers 500,000 square feet 46.

ExpertFor specialists

AMD's MI300X is among the GPU types in the IndiaAI Mission's shared compute pool, offered through empanelled cloud providers 72; the portal lists MI300X at ₹168.20 an hour on demand 59. We found no official AMD India update after 2023 on headcount or investment.

15.What’s next

SimpleStart here

Only what AMD has announced:

  • Helios with MI455X: in production, volume deployments in the second half of 2026 4 32.
  • MI430X: for scientific and national AI computing, expected 2027 5.
  • MI500: 2027. MI600: 2028 4.
DeeperThe detail

AMD's 2030 goal is 20 times better energy efficiency at rack scale compared with 2024 19. On the August 2026 call, Lisa Su said Helios initial shipments begin later in the third quarter and ramp through the fourth quarter into 2027 63.

ExpertFor specialists

The first big test is delivery: 1 gigawatt for OpenAI and Meta each in the second half of 2026, and Anthropic's first gigawatt in the first half of 2027 64 65 31. AMD's own growth targets (Data Center AI above 80% a year) assume those ramps land 8.
