What is Adobe Firefly?

Adobe Firefly is the generative AI system inside Adobe Creative Cloud. It powers AI features across Photoshop (Generative Fill, Generative Expand), Illustrator (Generative Recolour, text effects), Premiere Pro (video generation), and the standalone Firefly web and mobile app. You can use Firefly to generate images from text, fill in or extend existing photos, recolour designs, apply text effects, and generate video — all within tools you may already use.

The defining feature of Firefly is commercial safety. Adobe trained Firefly exclusively on Adobe Stock images, openly licensed content and public domain works where copyright has expired — not on scraped web images. This matters for professional and enterprise use: images generated by Firefly come with Adobe's IP indemnification, meaning Adobe takes legal responsibility if your generated image is found to infringe on someone else's copyright. No other AI image tool provides this level of legal protection.

In 2026, Firefly expanded significantly. The standalone Firefly app now integrates partner models including Google, OpenAI, ElevenLabs and others alongside Adobe's own models, giving access to a range of generation capabilities in one interface. The average Firefly prompt length doubled in 2025 according to Adobe's own data — users have moved from simple descriptions to detailed creative direction.

What Firefly can generate

Text to image — Describe what you want and Firefly generates it. The Image 4 model (current as of 2026) produces high-quality photorealistic and illustrative images with strong prompt adherence. Particularly good for product photography, people in settings, and conceptual imagery.

Generative Fill (Photoshop) — Select any area of an existing photo and describe what to replace it with. Remove an object and fill naturally. Add a person to an empty scene. Extend the sky. The fill uses context from the surrounding image to produce seamless results.

Generative Expand (Photoshop) — Extend an image beyond its original borders in any direction. Useful when a photo needs more space for a headline or when the crop is too tight for a format.

Text effects (Firefly app and Illustrator) — Apply AI-generated textures, materials and styles to the letterforms of any text. Type "SPRING" and apply a style like "made of flowers" or "ice sculpture". The text retains its shape but fills with the described material.

Generative Recolour (Illustrator) — Describe a colour palette in natural language ("tropical sunset", "muted earth tones") and Illustrator recolours your vector illustration accordingly.

Content Credentials — Every Firefly-generated image is automatically tagged with a digital "nutrition label" showing that it was AI generated, when, and how. This transparency feature is unique among AI image tools and increasingly required by publishers and advertisers.

Who Adobe Firefly is for

Firefly is the natural choice for existing Creative Cloud subscribers — if you already pay for Photoshop, Illustrator or the full CC suite, Firefly features are available inside the tools you already use. For professional designers, marketing teams and agencies where commercial safety is non-negotiable, Firefly is the safest AI image tool available.

It is also well-suited for teams that produce volume AI content for commercial use — advertising, branded content, editorial — where IP indemnification is a meaningful protection.

Why not just use Midjourney or DALL-E?

Midjourney produces the highest artistic quality of any AI image tool. DALL-E 3 has excellent prompt accuracy. Neither provides IP indemnification. If a client or lawyer asks "can we use this AI image commercially without legal risk?" — Firefly is the only tool where the answer is clearly yes. For creative exploration and personal projects, Midjourney or DALL-E are excellent. For commercial deliverables where legal protection matters, Firefly is the professional answer.

Is Firefly free?

Yes. The free tier includes 25 generative credits per month — enough to try the platform. Standard generation features (text-to-image, Generative Fill using Adobe models) use 1 credit per generation. Premium features (video generation, partner model outputs) use more credits. Firefly Standard is $9.99/month for 2,000 credits. Firefly Pro is $19.99/month for 4,000 credits and includes Adobe Express and Photoshop web/mobile. Creative Cloud All Apps ($60/month) includes Firefly alongside all Adobe applications.

Getting started with Firefly

Option A — Firefly web app

Go to firefly.adobe.com. Sign in with or create a free Adobe account. The web app has all core Firefly features including text-to-image, text effects and the partner model gallery. This is the fastest way to start — no software download required.

Option B — Inside Photoshop

If you have Photoshop (any current CC subscription), Generative Fill and Generative Expand are built in. Open any photo, make a selection with any selection tool, and click Generative Fill in the Properties panel. This is the most powerful use of Firefly — combining AI generation with professional photo editing.

Option C — Inside Illustrator

Generative Recolour and text effects are available in Illustrator. Select a vector path, go to Edit → Generative Recolour. Select text, go to Object → Text Effects → Generate.

14 Firefly prompts and use cases

Text-to-image generation

Product lifestyle photography
A [product name] on a [surface — marble, wooden, concrete]. [Describe setting — modern kitchen, outdoor cafe, minimalist studio]. Soft natural light from the left. Shallow depth of field, background softly blurred. Commercial photography style, high resolution. No people. [Brand colour] as an accent in the background.
Person in a setting
A [describe person — professional woman, 30s, business attire / casual young man, etc.] in [describe setting — modern open-plan office, outdoor urban setting, coffee shop]. Natural light. Looking [toward camera / slightly away]. Warm, approachable expression. Photorealistic, editorial quality. No text.
Conceptual illustration
A conceptual illustration representing [abstract concept — innovation, growth, security, connection]. Visual metaphor: [describe the metaphor — a seedling growing through concrete, a bridge made of people, hands holding a glowing orb]. Style: [clean vector / watercolour / photorealistic]. Colour palette: [describe colours]. No text.
Abstract background
Abstract [describe mood — warm and energetic / cool and professional / dark and dramatic] background. [Describe visual elements — flowing lines, geometric shapes, particles, gradients]. Colours: [list 2-3 hex codes or colour descriptions]. High resolution, suitable for use behind text overlays on a website or social media post. No objects, no people, no text.

Generative Fill in Photoshop

Remove and replace an object
Select the object to remove. In Generative Fill, leave the prompt empty. Photoshop fills the area with context-aware background, effectively removing the object. For replacing with something specific: type a description of what should be there instead — 'a wooden chair' or 'a window with trees outside'.
Extend a background
Use Generative Expand to add 30% more canvas above a landscape photo. Prompt: 'Dramatic clouds and blue sky, matching the existing sky colour and lighting in the photo.' The expanded area blends naturally with the original photograph.
Swap season or time of day
Select the sky in a photo using Select Sky. Generative Fill prompt: 'Overcast winter sky, grey and dramatic, matching the colour temperature of the photo.' Or 'Sunset sky, orange and pink, golden hour lighting.' Firefly replaces just the sky while leaving the foreground unchanged.
Add a branded environment
For a product shot that needs more context: select the background behind the product. Prompt: '[Brand name]-style minimalist studio, [brand colour] wall, soft directional lighting from upper right, wooden floor.' The product stays unchanged; the background becomes branded.

Text effects

Material text effect
Select text in Firefly web app. Prompt: 'Made entirely of [material — polished chrome, rough concrete, green moss and small flowers, melting chocolate, crumpled gold foil]. Photorealistic, dramatic side lighting, dark background for contrast.'
Seasonal typography
Prompt for text filled with a seasonal theme: 'Letters filled with [autumn leaves in orange and red / fresh spring flowers in pink and white / glowing embers and fire / frost and ice crystals]. Photorealistic detail, high contrast against a dark background.'

Generative Recolour in Illustrator

Brand palette recolour
Select entire illustration. Open Generative Recolour. Prompt: 'Apply a palette using only [brand colour 1 — e.g. deep navy #1B2B5E], [brand colour 2 — e.g. warm gold #D4A84B], and [brand colour 3 — e.g. clean white #FFFFFF]. Maintain contrast ratios for accessibility.'
Seasonal campaign recolour
For the same illustration used across seasonal campaigns: 'Winter — cold blues, silver and white.' 'Spring — soft pastels, mint and blush.' 'Summer — vibrant coral, yellow and teal.' 'Autumn — rust, burnt orange and deep brown.' Generate each variant and export as separate assets.

Tips for Adobe Firefly

Use Generative Fill for retouching, not just replacement. The most underused Firefly feature is using Generative Fill with an empty prompt to remove objects. Select an unwanted element, leave the prompt blank, click Generate. Firefly fills it with context-aware background. This replaces 80% of basic retouching tasks.

Use the Style Reference feature. In the Firefly web app, upload a reference image and Firefly will match its visual style in your generations — colour grading, lighting, composition. This is faster than describing a style in text and produces more consistent results when you have an existing visual identity to match.

Save prompt presets for brand consistency. Firefly lets you save prompts and style settings. Create a brand preset that captures your typical image style (lighting, colour temperature, composition preferences) and use it for every new generation. This saves time and keeps outputs consistent across a campaign.

Technical background

Adobe Firefly Image Model 4 is Adobe's current foundational image generation model, per Adobe's official product documentation. It was trained exclusively on Adobe Stock images, openly licensed content and public domain material where copyright has expired — per Adobe's official statement on training data. Adobe does not train on Creative Cloud subscribers' personal content unless users explicitly opt into the "Improve Adobe Products" program.

IP indemnification

Adobe provides IP indemnification for outputs from Firefly's commercially licensed models, per Adobe's official product pages. This means Adobe takes legal responsibility if a generated image is found to infringe copyright. This protection applies to standard Firefly model outputs. Partner model outputs (from Google, OpenAI, etc.) may have different licensing terms — verify with Adobe enterprise before using partner model outputs in commercial work.

Content Credentials

Adobe automatically attaches Content Credentials to every Firefly-generated image, per Adobe's official Firefly documentation. Content Credentials are a digital provenance standard developed by the Content Authenticity Initiative (CAI), co-founded by Adobe in 2019. The standard is now supported by over 3,300 organisations including major technology companies and news organisations, per the CAI's official membership list.

Generative credits

Most standard AI features in Creative Cloud (Generative Fill, text effects, Generative Recolour) use 1 generative credit per generation, per Adobe's official Creative Cloud generative AI features documentation (last updated March 30 2026). Premium features — video generation, audio generation, partner model outputs — consume more credits. Users on Firefly or Creative Cloud Pro plans have unlimited access to standard generations; premium features draw from the monthly credit pool.
