Gemini Advanced

Gemini Advanced is Google's premium AI tier — the most capable version of Gemini, powered by Google's most powerful models. It goes significantly beyond the free Gemini: a 1-million-token context window, Deep Research mode, Gems (custom AI agents), and deep integration with Google Workspace. For people who live in Google's ecosystem, it is the most naturally integrated AI assistant available.

What Gemini Advanced is

Gemini Advanced is the premium version of Google's AI assistant — available through Google One AI Premium subscription. It uses Google's most capable models (Ultra tier) rather than the standard models on the free Gemini tier, and unlocks features not available on free: a 1-million-token context window, Deep Research, Gems, and Workspace integration across Google Docs, Gmail, Sheets, Slides, and Drive.

The key distinction from free Gemini: capability depth and context. Free Gemini handles everyday questions well. Gemini Advanced handles professional, research-intensive, and multi-document tasks that require the most capable models and the longest context.

Who Gemini Advanced is best for: People who already use Google Workspace heavily — Docs, Gmail, Drive, Sheets. The integration advantage is significant. If you primarily use Microsoft 365, Copilot is the equivalent Google-ecosystem-integrated AI.

Key features unique to Gemini Advanced

  • 1-million-token context window — can process entire codebases, long books, or large document collections in one conversation. One of the largest context windows available in any consumer AI.
  • Deep Research — Gemini plans a multi-step research process, searches the web across many sources, and produces a structured, cited research report. Similar in concept to Perplexity Pro but integrated with Google's search index.
  • Gems — custom AI agents you configure with specific instructions, personas, and capabilities. Similar to ChatGPT's custom GPTs. Create a Gem for a recurring task type and it remembers how to behave for that task.
  • Google Workspace integration — ask Gemini to summarise emails in Gmail, draft content in Docs, analyse data in Sheets, create presentations in Slides, or search Drive. Accessible via the Gemini button within each app.
  • Multimodal input — text, images, PDFs, audio, and video inputs in the same conversation.

Gemini Advanced vs ChatGPT Plus and Claude Pro

All three are premium AI tiers at roughly $20/month. The practical differences: ChatGPT Plus has the widest plugin ecosystem, strongest DALL-E image generation, and most established user base. Claude Pro has the best instruction-following for professional writing tasks and the most nuanced responses. Gemini Advanced has the deepest Google ecosystem integration and the most powerful Deep Research feature. Choose based on which ecosystem you live in and which task types matter most to you.

How to use Deep Research effectively

Deep Research is Gemini Advanced's most distinctive feature. Rather than answering a question from training data or a single search, it plans a research agenda, conducts multiple searches across many sources, synthesises the findings, and produces a structured report with citations. It takes 5-15 minutes for complex topics but produces substantially more thorough output than a standard AI response.

To get the best results: be specific about scope (what to include, what level of detail, what format), specify the purpose (executive briefing vs deep technical analysis vs competitive landscape), and indicate any sources or perspectives that must be included.

Prompts for Gemini Advanced

Deep Research on a topic
Conduct deep research on [topic]. I need: (1) an executive summary (3-4 paragraphs), (2) the current state of [topic] — key facts, figures, and developments as of 2026, (3) the most significant recent changes or trends, (4) the main open questions or areas of uncertainty, (5) a curated list of the most important sources. Purpose: [describe how you will use this].
Summarise a long document in Google Drive
Summarise the document [document name] from my Google Drive. I need: the main argument or purpose, the key findings or recommendations, any action items or deadlines mentioned, and anything I should be concerned about or follow up on.
Analyse emails on a topic in Gmail
Search my Gmail for all emails about [topic/project/person] from the last [time period]. Summarise what has happened, what decisions have been made, what is still pending, and any upcoming deadlines or commitments.
Draft a document in Google Docs
In Google Docs, help me create a [document type] on [topic]. Structure: [describe structure if you have one, or ask Gemini to suggest one]. Tone: [professional/conversational/formal]. Length: approximately [word count]. Include [any specific elements].
Analyse data in Google Sheets
Look at the data in my Sheets file [file name]. Tell me: (1) a plain-English summary of what this data shows, (2) the most significant patterns or anomalies, (3) any trends over time if the data includes dates, (4) what questions I should be asking about this data that I might not have considered.
Create a Gem for a recurring task
Help me set up a Gem for [recurring task type — e.g. weekly status report writing / competitive analysis / customer email responses]. Write the Gem instructions that specify: the task context, how I want the output formatted, any constraints, and how it should handle ambiguity.
Research a company or competitor
Use Deep Research to give me a comprehensive profile of [company name]. Include: business model and revenue sources, recent news and developments (2025-2026), key products and positioning, leadership, competitive position, any notable challenges or controversies, and publicly available financial information.
Compare Gemini Advanced features to my use case
I primarily use AI for [describe your main use cases]. Compare Gemini Advanced, ChatGPT Plus, and Claude Pro specifically for these use cases. Be honest about where each is strongest and weakest. Which would you recommend for someone with my usage pattern?
Multimodal analysis — image + document
I am attaching [describe what you are attaching — image, PDF, screenshot]. Please [describe what you want — analyse, extract information, compare to another document, identify issues, explain what this shows].
Plan a research project with Deep Research
I need to research [broad topic] for [purpose — e.g. a presentation / a business decision / academic work]. Help me: (1) define the key questions I need to answer, (2) identify the best sources or types of sources for each question, (3) create a research plan I can use to guide multiple Deep Research sessions.

The Gemini model family (April 2026)

Gemini comes in three tiers:

  • Gemini Nano — runs on-device on Android phones and Pixel devices. Powers features like Smart Reply and summarisation within apps without sending data to the cloud.
  • Gemini Pro — the standard cloud model. Powers free Gemini at gemini.google.com and many Google product integrations.
  • Gemini Ultra — Google's most capable model. Powers Gemini Advanced on the Google One AI Premium tier. The 1-million-token context window is available on Ultra.

The Gemini 1.5 and 2.0 series represent significant capability upgrades, with particular improvements in multimodal reasoning (understanding across text, images, audio, and video simultaneously) and very long context processing. Google's technical report on Gemini 1.5 (arXiv:2403.05530) documents its performance across standard benchmarks.

The 1-million-token context window

At 1 million tokens, Gemini Advanced can process approximately 750,000 words — the equivalent of about 10 average-length novels, or a large codebase, in a single conversation. This is the largest generally available context window in any major consumer AI product as of April 2026. Practical applications include: analysing an entire company's document archive, reviewing a full software project's codebase, processing a complete academic literature review, or working with a year's worth of communications.

Workspace integration architecture

Gemini's integration into Google Workspace operates through direct API access to the user's Workspace data — emails, documents, calendar, Drive — with the user's permission. Unlike third-party AI tools that require export and re-import of data, Gemini can query live Workspace data in real time. This integration is governed by Google Workspace's enterprise data handling terms, which include commitments that Workspace data is not used to train Google's consumer AI models.
