AI assistants are large language models (LLMs) — software trained on vast datasets of text and code that can generate contextually appropriate responses to natural language prompts. The key insight for practical use: they are prediction engines that are remarkably good at producing useful text.

LLM development involves two primary phases:
Pre-training: The model is trained on a massive corpus — Common Crawl web data, books, code repositories, Wikipedia, and other licensed datasets — using self-supervised learning. The objective is next-token prediction: given a sequence of tokens, predict the next token. Running this process billions of times across trillions of tokens produces a base model with extensive world knowledge encoded in its weights.
Fine-tuning (RLHF): The base model is then refined using Reinforcement Learning from Human Feedback (RLHF), introduced by OpenAI in the InstructGPT paper (2022). One of the most significant findings in LLM research is that certain capabilities emerge unpredictably at scale. Below a threshold of model parameters, a capability may be absent; above it, it appears suddenly — a phenomenon termed “emergent abilities” by Wei et al. (2022).
