Answer Engine Optimisation (AEO)
Answer Engine Optimisation targets the surfaces that give a user an answer rather than a list of links. The techniques overlap heavily across snippets, voice, PAA and AI answers.
The Surfaces AEO Covers
Featured snippets — an extracted passage shown above organic results. The longest-established answer surface and still the best proxy for whether content is extractable.
People Also Ask — expandable related questions, each with an extracted answer. A rich source of query variations worth targeting.
Voice results — assistants typically read a single answer. Often, though not always, drawn from featured snippet content.
AI-generated answers — synthesised from several sources with citations.
Content that performs on one usually performs on the others, because they all reward the same thing: a clean, self-contained answer to a clearly identified question.
Question-First Structure
The pattern that works is consistent and simple:
- A heading phrased as the question, in the user's words
- A direct answer in the first 40 to 60 words immediately beneath it
- Elaboration, evidence, exceptions and detail after that
Most writing inverts this — building context first and reaching the answer in paragraph four. That structure reads well and extracts badly.
You can have both. Answer first, then give the context as supporting depth.
Formatting for Different Snippet Types
Paragraph snippets suit definitions and explanations. Aim for a self-contained 40–60 word answer.
List snippets suit processes, rankings and multi-item answers. Use a genuine ordered or unordered list with concise items and a heading that signals enumeration.
Table snippets suit comparisons, specifications and pricing. A properly marked-up HTML table is extracted far more reliably than a visual table built from divs.
Finding Questions Worth Answering
Sources of real questions, in rough order of usefulness: the People Also Ask boxes on your target queries, Search Console queries phrased as questions, the search terms report from paid campaigns, customer support tickets and sales call notes, and community threads where people ask in their own words.
Customer-facing staff are consistently the most underused source. They hear the actual phrasing daily.
Where AEO Is Worth It
AEO earns its effort on informational content where you can genuinely answer better than the current occupant, and on questions that sit early in a purchase journey you want to influence.
It is worth less on queries where the answer fully satisfies the need and no further action follows. Winning a snippet for a definition nobody acts on is a vanity result.
Writing So a Machine Can Lift the Answer
The structural requirement is the same across every answer surface: the answer must be extractable without the surrounding page. A paragraph that only makes sense after three paragraphs of context cannot be quoted.
What that looks like in practice:
- Answer in the first sentence under the heading, then elaborate. The inverted pyramid, applied per section rather than per article.
- One question per heading, phrased as the question is actually asked.
- Self-contained paragraphs that carry their own subject — no opening "this means that" pointing at something above.
- Definitions stated plainly and early, not built up to.
- Specific, checkable claims with figures and dates, because a hedged generality is not worth extracting.
The counter-intuitive part: this is also better writing for humans. The discipline of making each section stand alone produces pages people can scan and use, which is why AEO rarely requires a trade-off against quality — and why pages written to game it read badly to both audiences.
Being Honest About What It Returns
AEO is worth doing and is frequently oversold, and the gap is about what success looks like.
The realistic outcome is being cited, not being visited. An answer surface that uses your page may send no click at all. If your business model depends on pageviews, optimising to be the source of an answer that replaces the visit is optimising against yourself — worth saying plainly before the strategy is adopted.
The value is real where the citation itself is the win: brand presence at the moment of a question, credibility with a professional audience, and being the reference a buyer already half-trusts when they eventually do click.
Measurement is genuinely hard. Referral data from assistant surfaces is inconsistent, so the workable signals are indirect — branded search volume, direct traffic, and periodically asking the assistants your own questions and recording who they cite.
And it is not a separate discipline. Almost everything that makes a page extractable is standard structure, clarity and substance. A team being sold AEO as a new practice requiring new tooling should ask which part is not already in their SEO brief.
