๐Ÿ†• Try Something New

One AI tool you have never used before.

๐ŸŽฏ Today's goal: Your child explores an AI tool outside their usual toolkit โ€” applying all their evaluation skills to something unfamiliar.

๐Ÿ”ฅ Warm Up

Warm Up

"You have been using the same AI tools throughout the programme. Today you try a different one โ€” and apply everything you know to evaluate it."

"You are not a beginner anymore. You can assess a new AI tool properly."

๐Ÿค– The Activity

Main Activity

Choose an AI tool your child has not used before. Good options for this age: Perplexity (AI search), NotebookLM (document Q&A), or Canva AI (if not done). Check it is free tier and appropriate.

๐Ÿ“‹ Type this exactly
I am trying a new AI tool for the first time. I am going to evaluate it using these criteria: (1) what is it designed to do, (2) what does it do well, (3) what does it do badly, (4) how is it different from ChatGPT or Claude, (5) who would benefit most from using it. Help me build an evaluation framework for [the tool name].

Use the framework. Try the tool for 10 minutes โ€” structured exploration, not random clicking. Then fill in each evaluation criterion.

๐Ÿ“‹ Type this exactly
Based on my evaluation: [paste the filled-in framework]. Should I add this tool to my regular toolkit? Make a recommendation โ€” yes, no, or depends on the task.

Your child makes their own recommendation. They explain their reasoning.

๐Ÿงฉ The Twist

Go Deeper
๐Ÿ“‹ Type this exactly
How do you evaluate whether a new AI tool is trustworthy? Give me a checklist โ€” the questions I should ask about any new AI tool before I start using it seriously.

This is a practical checklist your child keeps for life. What is the company? What data do they collect? What are the terms of use for the outputs?

๐Ÿ›ก๏ธ Safety Moment
“If it feels wrong, close the tab and tell a grown-up”

New tools need extra caution. You do not yet know how this tool behaves, what it might produce, or who made it. All the usual rules apply โ€” plus extra alertness because it is unfamiliar.

Parent Notes

โ–ผ
What they learned

AI tool evaluation โ€” transferable skills for assessing any new technology.

Questions to ask
  • What was the most surprising thing about the new tool?
  • Would you use it again? For what?
  • What made it different from the tools you already know?
What to watch for

The evaluation framework is one of the most practically useful things from this session. Keep it โ€” it applies to every new tool encountered in future.

Safety in context

New tool = new safety check. Reinforce: same rules in every new AI environment.
