Threads Marketing
Threads is Meta's text-based conversation app, tied to Instagram identity. It reaches a large audience quickly and behaves quite differently from both Instagram and X.
How Threads Relates to Instagram
A Threads account is created from an Instagram account and carries the same handle. That linkage gave Threads an enormous standing start and means your Instagram following is partially portable.
The two apps remain distinct products. Instagram is visual and polished; Threads is textual and conversational. Cross-posting Instagram captions to Threads reads as obviously recycled and performs poorly.
Threads posts can be shared to Instagram Stories, which is a genuine distribution advantage — a text post can reach an audience that would not open a text app.
What the Algorithm Rewards
Threads is recommendation-led rather than follower-led. The feed mixes accounts you follow with a large share of suggested content, which means reach is not capped by follower count.
Replies are weighted heavily. A post that generates conversation is distributed far more widely than one that generates passive likes. This makes question-led and opinion-led posts structurally advantaged.
Consistency of posting matters more than on most platforms — accounts that post daily see materially better distribution than accounts posting weekly.
What Content Performs
Short observations with a clear point of view. Questions with genuine answers. Behind-the-scenes commentary. Replies to other people's posts, which are themselves distributed.
What does not perform: link-out posts, which are suppressed in reach as on most Meta surfaces; promotional announcements; and anything that reads as copy from another channel.
The practical pattern for brands is a named individual posting in their own voice rather than a corporate account posting announcements.
Is It Worth Your Time
Threads suits brands whose value is communicated through opinion, expertise and conversation — consultancies, media, software, creators, professional services.
It suits visual product categories poorly, where Instagram already does the job better.
The honest position: reach is currently generous relative to effort because the platform is still expanding, which makes it a reasonable low-cost bet. But it needs daily participation, and a dormant Threads presence is worse than none.
The Account Linkage, and What It Commits You To
A Threads account is created from an Instagram account and the two are bound together in ways that matter before you post anything.
The handle is inherited. You cannot choose a different name, so whatever your Instagram handle is, that is your Threads identity. For a brand with an inconsistent handle across networks, this decides the matter.
Deleting has historically been entangled with the Instagram account, and the separation has changed over time. Before a brand commits, confirm the current position rather than assuming — an account you cannot independently retire is a different commitment from one you can.
Your Instagram following does not transfer as followers, but it does drive the follow suggestions that determine early reach. An established Instagram presence is the main advantage a brand has here, and it decays if the Threads account sits dormant.
Practical consequence: do not open the account until someone owns it. A linked, empty, unmaintained account is worse than none, because it is discoverable through Instagram and signals abandonment.
Posting for a Conversational Feed
The format rewards different behaviour from Instagram, and brands importing an Instagram approach underperform predictably.
Replies are the mechanism, not the afterthought. Distribution follows conversation, so a post that generates twenty replies you engage with outperforms a polished post that generates fifty silent likes. Budget the time for replying before the time for posting.
Text carries. Unlike Instagram, an image is optional and often unnecessary. This lowers the production cost substantially, which is the main argument for a brand being there at all.
Links are tolerated rather than rewarded. Treat it as a place to have the conversation, with the link as a follow-up in a reply rather than the point of the post.
Post more, polish less. The cadence that works is closer to several short posts a day than to a scheduled calendar, which is a resourcing decision rather than a creative one — and the honest reason many brands should not be here.
