Google Business Profile Optimisation
Your Google Business Profile is the most important asset in local SEO. It determines map pack visibility more than your website does, and most profiles are left half-configured.
Categories Are the Highest-Leverage Setting
Your primary category is the strongest relevance signal Google has. It should describe what the business fundamentally is, not what you aspire to also offer. A bakery that also serves coffee is a bakery, not a coffee shop.
Secondary categories extend reach into adjacent searches. Add them where genuinely accurate, but do not pad the list — irrelevant categories dilute rather than expand.
To find the right category, look at what the top three businesses in your map pack use. This is visible in the page source of their profile, and it tells you what Google already associates with those queries.
Completing the Profile Properly
Every field left blank is a missed relevance signal. Work through:
- Services and products — list them individually with descriptions, not as one block
- Attributes — wheelchair access, outdoor seating, appointment required, women-owned; these appear as filters in search
- Hours including special hours for holidays; inaccurate hours generate negative reviews
- Business description — 750 characters, written for humans, covering what you do and where
- Opening date — contributes to prominence
Photos and Posts
Profiles with photos get meaningfully more clicks and direction requests. Upload real photographs of the premises, the team, and the work — not stock images. Add new ones periodically rather than uploading everything once.
Google Posts appear directly on your profile in search results. They are underused by most businesses. Use them for offers, events, and updates. They expire after seven days unless dated as events, so they need a regular cadence to be worth doing.
The Q&A Section
Anyone can ask a question on your profile, and anyone can answer it. That includes competitors and people with wrong information.
Monitor it. Answer questions promptly and accurately. You are also permitted to post your own questions and answer them, which is a legitimate way to surface the information customers most often ask about.
Maintaining the Profile
Profiles decay. Google occasionally applies unrequested edits, categories get changed, and user-submitted information appears. Check the profile monthly and after any business change.
Suspension is the serious risk. It usually follows a policy breach — keyword stuffing in the business name, a fake address, or a virtual office. Recovery is slow. Avoid the shortcuts that trigger it.
What Gets a Profile Suspended
Suspension is the risk nobody plans for and it removes your listing from the map entirely while you appeal — which can take weeks.
The common causes, most frequent first:
- Keywords in the business name. The name field must be the real-world name. "Sharma Dental — Best Dentist in Pune" is the single most common violation, it is easy to detect, and competitors report it.
- An address that is not a real, staffed location — a virtual office, a mailbox, a co-working desk, or a residential address publicly displayed for a service business that should hide it.
- Multiple listings for one location, or a listing per practitioner where the guidelines permit one.
- Category not matching what the business does on the premises.
- A sudden burst of reviews, which triggers review-related suspension even where the reviews are genuine.
Edit substantial fields one at a time, with a gap. Changing name, address, category and hours together on an established profile is a recognised trigger.
Maintaining It as a Live Channel
The profile is treated as a setup task and behaves like a channel — it changes without you, and the changes are visible to customers before they are visible to you.
Suggested edits from the public can alter your information. Someone can propose a different phone number or set of hours, and it can go live. Check the profile on a schedule; this is the single most common cause of “our number is wrong on Google”.
The Q&A section is public and anyone can answer. Questions left unanswered get answered by strangers, sometimes wrongly. Seed it deliberately with the questions you are actually asked and answer them yourself.
Hours matter more than they look. Special hours for holidays prevent the review that begins "drove there and it was closed", which is unanswerable after the fact.
Photos age. Customer photos accumulate and the impression is formed by the most recent, not the best.
And watch the insights for direction requests and calls rather than views. Those are the actions; views are the audience — and the only one of the two you can act on is the first.
