TikTok Creative Best Practices
TikTok creative has a distinct grammar. Ads that respect it perform; ads that import conventions from other platforms do not.
The First Second
The scroll decision happens almost immediately. Everything depends on giving a reason to stay before the viewer has consciously decided anything.
Hooks that work: an unexpected visual, a direct question, a claim that invites disagreement, showing the end result first, or a person speaking straight to camera with urgency. Hooks that fail: logo cards, slow establishing shots, and any build-up that assumes patience.
Sound Is Not Optional
TikTok plays with sound on by default, which is unusual among feeds. Audio is therefore part of the creative rather than an accessibility addition.
Voiceover, trending audio, and sound effects all contribute. Silent ads read as broken. Equally, always include captions — a share of viewers still watch muted, and captions improve retention even when audio is on.
Native Pacing and Production
High production value can actively hurt performance by signalling advertisement. Phone-shot footage, jump cuts, imperfect lighting and unscripted delivery frequently outperform studio work.
This is not an argument for carelessness — it is an argument for a different aesthetic. The content still needs a clear structure, good sound and a point.
Creator Content
Creator-made ads outperform brand-made ads consistently enough that most serious TikTok advertisers build creator pipelines rather than relying on in-house production.

Brief loosely. A creator given a script produces content that sounds like a script.
Creative Volume and Fatigue
TikTok creative fatigues faster than on other platforms — often within one to two weeks at meaningful spend. Performance decay is usually a creative problem, not a targeting or bidding problem.
This means the production pipeline matters more than the account structure. Plan for a continuous supply of new assets rather than a campaign shoot. Test in volume, retire quickly, and keep a backlog.
Testing Creative at the Rate the Platform Consumes It
The binding constraint on TikTok is creative supply. Assets fatigue faster than on any comparable platform, so a process that produces one polished video a month cannot feed it.
Build a testing structure that isolates the variable. Same audience, same budget, several distinct creative concepts — not variations of one concept, which tests nothing useful. Distinct means a different hook, a different format, a different narrator.
Judge early on hold rate, not on conversions. The share of viewers still watching at two and six seconds tells you within hours whether a hook works, long before conversion data is readable. A creative that loses most viewers in two seconds will not be rescued by the landing page.
Retire on a schedule, not on a threshold. Waiting for performance to collapse means running weak creative through the decline. Plan the replacement while the current asset is still working.
And produce in batches. A shoot that yields eight usable variants costs little more than one that yields two, and the constraint is volume.
Using Creators Without the Usual Mistakes
Creator-made content generally outperforms brand-made content on the platform, and most brands undermine the advantage in the same three ways.
Over-directing. A creator handed a script produces an advert in their own voice, which is the worst of both. Brief the message and the constraints; leave the execution alone.
Not securing usage rights. Running a creator's organic post as paid media requires permission, and negotiating it after the post performs costs far more than agreeing it upfront. Settle the term, the platforms and whether you may edit, before the shoot.
Treating it as a one-off. The creators who work best are the ones who understand the product, and that takes more than one video. A small roster producing regularly beats a large roster producing once.
On disclosure: a paid relationship must be evident to the viewer, and the platform's own paid-partnership tool is the clearest way to do it. The obligation follows the payment, not the format — a gifted product is a material connection too.
