Microsoft Audience Network
The Microsoft Audience Network serves native ads across Microsoft-owned and partner properties, using intent signals drawn from search and browsing behaviour.
What the Audience Network Is
It is Microsoft's native and display offering, distinct from search advertising. Placements appear on MSN, Outlook.com, Microsoft Edge new tab, and a network of partner publishers.
Formats are native — the ad adopts the visual style of the surrounding content rather than appearing as a banner. This generally produces better engagement than standard display and makes creative quality more important.
The Intent Advantage
The distinguishing feature is targeting informed by Microsoft's search and browsing data. Rather than targeting only by declared interest, campaigns can reach people whose recent search behaviour indicates active intent.
This positions the network between display prospecting and search — broader reach than search, with better intent signal than most display inventory.
Targeting Options
- In-market audiences — people showing purchase signals in a category
- Custom audiences — your own remarketing lists via the UET tag
- LinkedIn profile targeting — company, industry and job function, available here as well as on search
- Similar audiences — expansion from your existing lists
- Product audiences — for retailers with a Microsoft Merchant Center feed
Where It Works
Performs relatively well for B2B given the LinkedIn layer and the workplace-skewed audience, for higher-consideration consumer purchases, and as a remarketing channel reaching people who will not see your Google display ads.
Performs poorly as a direct-response channel expected to convert on first exposure, and in categories where creative cannot be made to feel native.
Managing It Properly
Two controls matter most. Set a frequency cap — native inventory can deliver heavy repetition to a small audience. And review the placement report regularly, excluding partner sites that deliver clicks without engagement.
Keep Audience Network campaigns separate from search campaigns. Mixing them in one campaign makes performance impossible to read and budget impossible to control.
Controlling Placement Quality
The Audience Network's recurring complaint is placement quality: the ads appear somewhere the advertiser did not expect and performance data becomes hard to read. The controls exist and most accounts never touch them.
Website exclusions are the first lever. Run the placement report after the first fortnight, sort by spend, and exclude anything that has spent meaningfully without converting. This is maintenance, not a one-off, because the inventory pool changes.
Separate the campaign from search. Audience Network can be enabled inside a search campaign, which mixes two very different intent profiles into one set of numbers and one bid strategy. Running it as its own campaign costs nothing and makes both readable.
Bid adjustments by placement let you retain the network at a lower price rather than switching it off entirely, which is usually the better trade for a channel that works at the right CPC and not at the wrong one.
Judge it on incremental conversions rather than last-click. This is upper-funnel inventory and last-click attribution will systematically undervalue it — the same way it undervalues display everywhere.
The LinkedIn Signal, and Its Limits
The genuine differentiator is profile targeting derived from LinkedIn — company, industry and job function — available in a self-serve search-adjacent platform rather than only inside LinkedIn's own ad products. For B2B that is a real advantage and it is why the network is worth testing at all.
Three limits to plan around. Coverage is partial: the signal is available for the share of users who can be matched, so a campaign restricted to profile targeting addresses a fraction of the network's reach and will under-deliver against a naive forecast. Company targeting is not account-based marketing — it is a broad firmographic filter, not a named-account list with the precision that implies. Job function is coarse, and mapping it onto your actual buying committee takes work that a category label hides.
The practical approach is to layer profile targeting onto an intent signal — remarketing, or a customer match list — rather than relying on it alone. Used as the sole targeting input it behaves like broad display with a professional gloss. Used as a qualifier on people who have already shown interest, it does something the other networks cannot.
