Amazon Advertising Fundamentals

Amazon advertising reaches shoppers at the point of purchase. It is the largest retail media network and operates on logic closer to search than to display.

Why Retail Media Is Different

On Google, a searcher may be researching. On Amazon, they are overwhelmingly shopping. Purchase intent is the default state, which compresses the funnel and makes advertising unusually direct in effect.

The second difference is that the advertising platform and the sales channel are the same system. Amazon knows whether the ad produced a sale with certainty, which removes most of the attribution ambiguity that dominates other channels.

The third is that advertising and organic rank interact. Ad-driven sales contribute to the sales velocity that improves organic ranking, so advertising can have a lasting effect beyond the campaign.

The Main Ad Types

Sponsored Products — keyword and product-targeted ads promoting individual listings, appearing in search results and on product pages. The largest share of most budgets and the best starting point.

Sponsored Brands — banner-style ads with logo, headline and multiple products, appearing above search results. Requires brand registry. Better for brand visibility and range discovery.

Sponsored Display — retargeting and audience-based placements on and off Amazon, including product pages and external sites.

Amazon DSP — programmatic buying using Amazon audience data across Amazon properties and the open web. Typically requires higher minimum spend.

The Listing Comes First

Advertising amplifies a listing; it does not fix one. Traffic driven to a listing with poor images, thin bullet points, few reviews or an uncompetitive price converts badly and wastes budget.

Before increasing spend, ensure the listing has: a compliant main image, complete and specific bullet points, backend search terms filled, competitive pricing, and enough reviews to clear the credibility threshold in the category.

Advertising a weak listing is the most common and most expensive error on the platform.

ACOS and the Metrics That Matter

ACOS — advertising cost of sale, ad spend divided by ad revenue. The platform's default efficiency metric.

TACOS — total ACOS, ad spend divided by total revenue including organic. More useful, because it shows whether advertising is lifting the whole business or merely cannibalising organic sales.

A falling TACOS with stable revenue means advertising is building organic rank. A stable ACOS with flat total revenue usually means ads are taking sales that would have happened anyway.

Where Amazon Ads Fits

Essential for anyone selling on Amazon at scale — organic visibility alone is no longer sufficient in most competitive categories.

Also relevant for brands not selling on Amazon, through DSP, as a way to reach audiences defined by real purchase behaviour rather than inferred interest.

Beyond ACOS — the Metrics That Change Decisions

ACOS is the number everyone quotes and it only describes advertising. Three others change what you actually do.

TACOS — total advertising cost of sales, measured against all sales rather than attributed ones. It is the one number that shows whether advertising is building organic performance: a falling TACOS at constant spend means organic sales are growing underneath the advertising, which is the outcome you want and which ACOS cannot see.

New-to-brand. A campaign returning well entirely from existing customers is capturing demand rather than creating it. Both are legitimate; they are different businesses and should be budgeted separately.

Share of voice on your core terms, which tells you whether a competitor is moving on you before the sales data does.

And the discipline that matters more than any metric: a break-even ACOS is a calculation, not a benchmark. It follows from your margin, and a target copied from an article describes somebody else's product.

Choosing Among the Ad Types

Three main formats, and the common error is running all of them at once before knowing which is carrying the result.

Sponsored Products is where almost every account should start. It appears in results and on product pages, it is the closest to the purchase, and it is the easiest to read.

Sponsored Brands puts a logo, a headline and several products at the top. Useful once you have a range worth showing and a brand worth showing it under; wasteful for a single product with no brand recognition.

Sponsored Display reaches beyond the search result — onto competitor listings, and off-platform to people who viewed your products. High variance, and the one most likely to look impressive on attributed numbers while adding little.

The sequence that works: establish Sponsored Products, make it profitable, then add one more and measure the total rather than the new campaign. If total sales do not move when a second type is added, it is reallocating credit — the same test that applies to every retail media question.
