🖼 What is AI Art?

Understand how AI generates images — and what that really means.

🎯 Today's goal: Your child learns how AI image generation works — not as magic, but as a technical process — and makes their first image.

🔥 Warm Up

Warm Up

Close your eyes and imagine the most beautiful place in the world. What do you see?

"Now let's see if you can describe it well enough that AI draws it."

🤖 The Activity

Main Activity

📋 Type this exactly

Explain to a 10-year-old how AI image generation actually works. Not what it produces — HOW it works. What is a diffusion model? What is it doing when it generates an image? Use a simple analogy.

📋 Type this exactly

Generate an image description for this scene: [child describes their beautiful place from the warm-up]. Make the description specific enough that a human artist could paint it exactly. Use: time of day, light quality, colours, foreground, background, mood.

📋 Type this exactly

Now write a simpler version of the same description — more vague — and explain what would be different about the image that results.

Use Canva AI or Microsoft Designer (parent account, free tier) to test both descriptions. Compare the results.

🧩 The Twist

Go Deeper

📋 Type this exactly

Did AI make what you imagined? What was different? What does that tell you about the gap between what you picture in your mind and what you can describe in words?

🛡️ Safety Moment

“Never share personal information”

AI image tools sometimes ask for a name or account. Use parent account only. No child's real name, school, photo, or location goes into any prompt.

What they learned

Visual prompt engineering — the gap between imagination and description.

Questions to ask

Was the AI image what you pictured?
What words made the biggest difference?
How is describing an image different from describing a story?

What to watch for

The gap between what the child imagined and what AI produced is the most valuable learning moment.

Safety in context

Image tool safety: parent account only, no identifying personal details in prompts.
