🦁 Animal ID with AI
How AI recognises species from photos and sounds.
Stuck at any point? Ask an AI about this page →🎯 Today's goal: Your child learns how AI camera traps work — and tests AI on the most obscure animal they know.
🔥 Warm Up
Warm Up
Name an animal you think most people have never heard of. Something really obscure.
Now let's see what AI knows — and how it would identify it.
🤖 The Activity
Main Activity
📋 Type this exactly
Explain how camera trap AI works. When it sees a photo of a lion, what is it actually doing? What is it comparing, and how did it learn? Use simple language for a 10-year-old.
📋 Type this exactly
Tell me everything about [child's obscure animal]. How would an AI identify this animal in the wild? What features would it look for? Why is identifying rare animals harder for AI?
📋 Type this exactly
What are 3 animals that are genuinely hard for AI to tell apart — and what specific features cause the confusion?
🧩 The Twist
Go Deeper
📋 Type this exactly
Can AI identify animals by sound alone? Give me a real example of a project that does this.
Ask: what AI skill used here is also used in voice assistants?
🛡️ Safety Moment
“AI makes mistakes — always check”
AI animal ID systems need human expert verification — especially for rare species.

Parent Notes
▼What they learned
AI pattern recognition in a concrete nature context.
Questions to ask
- How does AI learn to tell similar animals apart?
- What happens if training data only has animals from one country?
- What does a wildlife biologist do that AI cannot?
What to watch for
Children who love animals get very engaged here.
