WhatsApp has 500M users in India and 98% open rates. It is the most underused marketing channel for Indian businesses.
WhatsApp marketing occupies a unique position in Indian digital marketing: it's where customers actually are (500M+ Indian users), it has open rates of 90-98% (compared to 20-25% for email), and it's still severely underutilised by most businesses for genuine marketing communication. The practitioner who understands WhatsApp's technical architecture and regulatory requirements has an advantage in virtually every client context in India.
There are two distinct WhatsApp products for businesses: WhatsApp Business App (free, for small businesses with limited message volume, manual management) and WhatsApp Business API (paid, for medium-large businesses needing automation, multiple agents, and bulk messaging). The API is where sophisticated marketing happens — broadcast campaigns, automated flows, chatbots, and CRM integration.
📱
WhatsApp Business is a corner shop. WhatsApp API is a distribution centre. The corner shop (Business App) handles local deliveries manually - perfectly adequate at small scale. The distribution centre (API) handles thousands of shipments daily with automated routing, tracking, and multiple handlers. A business trying to send 10,000 messages from the corner shop will break. The distribution centre is designed for it.
📣
Broadcast Campaigns
Send approved template messages to opted-in contacts. Templates must be pre-approved by Meta. Categories: Marketing (promotions), Utility (order updates), Authentication (OTPs). Pricing per conversation window.
🤖
Chatbot Automation
Keyword-triggered responses, menu-based flows, lead qualification bots, appointment booking, order status queries. Built in WhatsApp BSP (Business Solution Provider) platforms like Wati, Interakt, or WA.Expert.
🔗
CRM Integration
WhatsApp conversations flow into CRM (Zoho, HubSpot). Customer data synced bidirectionally. Trigger WhatsApp messages from CRM events (lead scored, deal stage changed, booking confirmed).
⚠️
Opt-In Requirements
All recipients must explicitly opt in to receive WhatsApp marketing messages. Double opt-in recommended. Cannot message users who haven't opted in - violates Meta's policy and Indian TRAI regulations.
🔮 The WhatsApp marketing regulation landscape in India: TRAI's regulations on commercial communication apply to WhatsApp Business API messages. Businesses must register as Principal Entities (PEs), register their message templates as UTMs (Unstructured Text Messages), and maintain DND (Do Not Disturb) compliance. Meta also independently enforces quality ratings - businesses whose messages receive too many 'Block' responses get reduced delivery limits. The practitioner must understand both regulatory and platform compliance simultaneously.

Read the reference page below before taking the quiz.
What is the key difference between WhatsApp Business App and WhatsApp Business API?
A
A: The API is free, the Business App costs money
B
B: The Business App is for small scale manual management; the API enables automation, bulk messaging, multiple agents, and CRM integration at enterprise scale
C
C: The API only works for e-commerce businesses
D
D: The Business App allows more messages than the API
OK Business App: free, manual, one agent, limited broadcast (256 contacts per list), no automation. API: paid via BSP, automated flows, chatbots, unlimited broadcasts to opted-in contacts, multiple agents, CRM integration. API is the enterprise-scale marketing infrastructure.
NO Business App = free, manual, small scale. API = paid, automated, enterprise scale with chatbots, bulk messaging, and CRM integration. The API is where marketing automation happens.
Question 2 of 5
What is a 'WhatsApp Template Message' and why must it be pre-approved by Meta?
A
A: A saved draft message you can reuse
B
B: A structured message format used for outbound messaging to opted-in contacts that must be pre-approved by Meta to ensure compliance with messaging policies
C
C: An automatic reply to incoming messages
D
D: A WhatsApp Status post template
OK Template messages are the only way to initiate outbound WhatsApp conversations with contacts (after the 24-hour conversation window closes). Meta reviews templates to ensure they comply with anti-spam, misleading content, and regulated industry policies before approval. Sending non-approved messages via the API violates Meta's policies.
NO Template messages are pre-approved outbound message formats. Meta reviews them to ensure compliance with policies before allowing them to be sent. They're required for all outbound marketing messages after the 24-hour window.
Question 3 of 5
Why is opt-in mandatory for WhatsApp marketing and what constitutes a valid opt-in?
A
A: Meta charges extra for messaging non-opted-in users
B
B: WhatsApp's policies and Indian TRAI regulations require explicit consent before sending commercial messages - valid opt-in includes a clear checkbox on a form specifically mentioning WhatsApp communication
C
C: Opt-in improves message delivery rates only
D
D: Opt-in is optional for transactional messages
OK WhatsApp's policies and Indian regulations require explicit consent. Messaging without opt-in risks: account suspension by Meta, TRAI violations, and high block rates that reduce delivery limits. Valid opt-in: a separate, un-pre-ticked checkbox on a form specifically stating 'I agree to receive WhatsApp messages from [Brand]'.
NO Opt-in is required by both Meta's policies and Indian TRAI regulations. Messaging without consent = policy violation + legal risk + high block rates that limit your delivery. Explicit opt-in via dedicated checkbox is the requirement.
Question 4 of 5
A clothing brand wants to send a promotional WhatsApp message about a sale to their 10,000 customer database. What is the correct setup?
A
A: Use WhatsApp Business App and manually message everyone
B
B: Set up WhatsApp Business API via a BSP, create a Marketing template message, verify the database has opted in, and use the broadcast feature to send the template
C
C: Create a WhatsApp group with all customers
D
D: Send through personal WhatsApp with a Business profile
OK For 10,000 contacts: WhatsApp Business API is required (Business App limits to 256 per broadcast). Create a Marketing template, get it approved by Meta, verify all contacts have opted in, then broadcast. A BSP (Wati, Interakt, WA.Expert) provides the platform to manage this.
NO 10,000 contacts requires the API. Process: BSP setup > Marketing template creation + Meta approval > verify opt-in status of all contacts > broadcast. Business App cannot handle this volume.
Question 5 of 5
What is a BSP (Business Solution Provider) in the context of WhatsApp marketing?
A
A: A government-certified business registration
B
B: An authorised third-party platform that provides access to the WhatsApp Business API with a management interface for businesses without direct API development capability
C
C: A type of WhatsApp chatbot
D
D: A payment processing service for WhatsApp Commerce
OK BSPs like Wati, Interakt, WA.Expert, and Freshchat are Meta-authorised platforms that provide WhatsApp API access through a user interface, without the business needing to build direct API integration. They provide: template management, broadcast campaigns, chatbot builders, team inbox, and analytics.
NO BSP = authorised third-party platform providing API access through a management interface. Brands use BSPs (Wati, Interakt, etc.) instead of building direct API integration. They provide the tools to manage WhatsApp marketing without technical development.
